Nearly 90 motorcycles turned up in Liverpool recently as the Brotherhood of Bikers held their first annual Toy Run to support The Salvation Army’s Christmas campaign.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, the fleet of bikes rode around the surrounding countryside to support children at Christmas in the region. The event concluded with a barbecue, provided by the Brotherhood of Bikers, and staffed by Salvation Army volunteers.

The event raised $1,167.30, as well as collecting a number of new toys to end up under Christmas trees in the region this December.

“We really didn’t know what to expect, and we were told that they might have 50 bikes, but in the end they had a fantastic response, and we were really pleased with that,” says Lt. Rose Campbell, Corps Officer in Liverpool.

The funds and toys go toward the annual Christmas campaign in the south shore. Last year, over 300 support hampers were distributed, and over 250 children received toys, in the communities of Liverpool, Caledonia and Shelburne. For Campbell, this event helped to unofficially kick off the drive to Christmas.

“This goes a long way toward meeting the requirements here at Christmas,” she says. “Our goal for Christmas fundraising is $20,000, and now we’re on our way toward our goal before we even launch our kettles. It’s a good start.”
