The Open Arms Centre got ready to kick off the new school year on Friday, hosting a registration event that featured food and fun for children and adults alike.

WEB1Families enjoyed a barbecue, face painting, games, prizes and even a bouncy castle, turning a run-of-the-mill registration into much more.

Located in downtown Halifax, in Uniacke Square, the Open Arms Centre serves as a positive environment for children and women of the community. The Centre operates programs Monday through Friday.

During the morning and early afternoon, the centre hosts women from the community for activities including sewing classes, discussion groups and Bible studies. Come mid-afternoon, the facility transforms into an after-school drop-in Centre for youth aged 6-14. In a welcoming, safe environment, the children participate in free play, crafts, cooking classes, reading, music and more. The Centre also features a number of special activities during holiday periods, such as March break camps, summer camps and Christmas and Easter parties.

New programs for 2014-15 include guitar and sheet music lessons for children and adults, and a movie club for adults.

Despite cool, windy conditions, Friday’s registration was a success, signing up a number of new children and women for programs beginning next week.
