Scotian Glen Camp hosted children from the Halifax area last week, as 94 children aged 7-12 were busy having fun in the sun. Though the weather was warm, that didn’t seem to slow the campers down one bit. During pool time, they lined up to grab noodles and pool toys, or take a ride down the slide. Scotian Glen’s new pool was built last year, and you can hear the laughter and fun coming from the pool throughout half of the camp. When asked what their favorite part of camp was, almost all of the campers answered with a resounding, “swimming!” Click here to see our Day At Camp Video!

Though only there a few days as of Wednesday, they had lots to show from their time there. Campers run excitedly into the craft cabin to show off the masks they had made the day before for the weird animals theme, for suppertime that evening. Feathers and glitter cover table surfaces as campers take their seats for craft time. Gabrielle, age six, can’t sit down for crafts until she points out her favorite part of camp. “I like the turtle,” she says, pointing to the small turtle tank in the corner. “She’s really old but we still love her.”

As they begin to color their lizard door hangers, they are happy to talk about what they get to do every day. “We wake up every morning and go to the flag, and then we have breakfast. After breakfast we sing songs, learn about the Bible, and go to the playground and to the pool!” The campers also get to choose an elective to participate in. Options for electives include rhythm, dance, sports, painting, drama and more.

During devotions things slow down a little, and there is time for learning and discussion. The girls aged 10-12 gather on the balcony of the snack shack to tackle some tough issues. The counsellor is discussing body image struggles and relays to the girls her own personal issues with the topic. Eleven year old Paige gives some more insight into the affect the counsellors are having on the camper’s lives. “The part about camp that I love the most is the relationships I have with the counsellors. Knowing that they care about me, it means a lot.”

You can easily see the connections that the campers make with each other as well. They walk from one activity to the next chatting and laughing, sometimes arm-in-arm. Destiny has been going to camp for six years now and her favorite part is spending time with her friends. “My friends and I knock on the walls between our rooms. We have secret codes and we make up jokes.”

Through a child’s eyes, camp is a place where they can experience fun, friendship, laughter, and most importantly, love.
