Summer at The Salvation Army brings with it a number of new beginnings as officers around the country transfer to new appointments. Here at the Maritime Division we are welcoming nine new officers in five different locations. Here is our first instalment in a five-part series introducing you to them.

Can you tell me a bit about your history?
Bhreagh: A few years ago, I started attending The Salvation Army with my dad in Yarmouth, N.S., but before that I never really knew it existed. Through the corps, I connected with Major’s Peter and Janice Rowe, who are Daniel’s aunt and uncle. They told us to check each other out, so we did. Originally we got to know each other through Facebook, and talking on the phone. We finally met a few months later at the 2010 Atlantic Congress in Newfoundland. I was in Nursing School at the time.

Daniel: We got married in 2012 and went off to Training College that September where we spent 2 years training and learning what it takes to be an Officer. It feels great to have finished, and we’re excited to be moving on to our next step.

When did you feel your call into ministry?
Bhreagh: Daniel felt his call first as a teenager and has always been extremely committed to that call. I loved nursing but could tell it wasn’t what I’m supposed to do and had a “holy discontentment”. We met, talked and prayed a lot and decided to pursue our call together and we’re very glad we did. We know this is exactly where God wants us to be.

    How are you enjoying Truro?
Daniel: We’ve been city people for a while now, so it’s quite the change for us, but we’re loving it. The people are so nice, and friendly. Everyone says hello and people have been so welcoming. It’s a really beautiful town, and we’re excited to see more of it. I moved around a lot growing up because my parents are Salvation Army Officers. We were actually stationed in Truro for a few years, at this very same church so it is great to be back.

Have you been to the church yet?
Daniel: We already had our first Sunday in the church and it was great. Captains Morgan and Lisa brought that camp staff and did our installation and we both spoke about our journeys so far and how we got to be where we are right now. We wanted the congregation to know that we are real people who have our own struggles and successes but we will always be real with them and are excited to be a part of the Truro Corps family.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Bhreagh: We’re still in the newlywed phase of our marriage, even though it will be two years this summer so we just enjoy spending time together, travelling, exploring and we love watching lots of movies together.
Daniel: My favorite is the Star War’s movies.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Daniel: I would like to be able to fly!
Bhreagh: I would like the power of being able to know what’s going to happen before it happens.

Who is your role model and why?
Bhreagh: I would say my role models are the female officers that I’ve met and formed a relationship with. I had concerns originally, that I wouldn’t fit in the mold of what an officer should be. It was through my relationships with these women that I realized that I just need to be exactly who I am.

Daniel: My role model would have to be my father. He was a Salvation Army officer who was always giving of himself to others in the community, yet he always made time for us. No, actually he didn’t have to make time for us, we were his first priority, and he always made sure we knew that.

Can you tell us a fun fact about each of you?
Bhreagh: When I’m stressed out, I always bake. It seems to calm me. So if I start brining baked goods everywhere with me, you know I’m feeling a little stressed.

Daniel: To expand on Bhreagh’s answer, when I’m stressed out, I love to play video games. It helps relax me when it’s just me and the screen.
