On the evening of June 5, The Salvation Army Spryfield and Family Resource Centre was honored to be the recipient of the Non-Profit of the Year Award. The award, given out by the Spryfield and District Business Commission, is given to a non-profit organization that does exceptional good works in the community.

“It’s wonderful for the people who volunteer here, that their efforts are recognized by the community,” says Kirk MacLeod, Corps Officer in Spryfield.

The Resource Centre moved into its current location (328 Herring Cove Road) in June 2009. Since then, many programs have been created to help meet the needs of the community. These programs include a sewing club, a community soup luncheon run in partnership with Hand in Hand, a seniors club, baby song, kid’s club, cooking on a budget and a community breakfast program, to name just a few.

They also run the Atlantic Refugee and Immigration Services (ARIS), under the direction of Marie Kettle, that works to help refugees and immigrants make legal applications to stay in Canada.

“The Salvation Army is an integral part of the Spryfield community, and we look forward to ministering and partnering with them for many years to come,” says Ryan Brennan, Chairman of the Spryfield and District Business Commission.
