Maritimers have proven their generosity once again to the tune of $1.7 million raised in the annual Christmas kettle campaign, exceeding the goal and marking a record of giving for the region.

Funds were collected at more than 200 kettle locations in the Maritimes from mid-November until Christmas Eve. In 2012, Maritimers donated $1.58 million to the campaign.

“I am grateful for the continued success of our kettle campaign,” says Major Alison Cowling, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army Maritime Division. “We owe this success to the generosity of Maritimers, who never fail to fill our kettles. Funds raised during the campaign will continue to give hope today and every day to those who need it most.”

Many communities around the Maritimes saw significant growth in their kettle totals this year. Moncton, NB, saw a huge increase in kettle donations this year with nearly $50,000 raised over last year’s total, while Dartmouth, NS, increased their donations by more than $13,000.

Nationally, the campaign collected over $21 million in donations, a two per cent increase from 2012.

“Year after year, we are truly thankful for the support we receive from our partners, donors, and volunteers,” says Captain Les Marshall, Public Relations and Development Secretary for The Salvation Army in Canada and Bermuda. “This year, despite unprecedented weather that wreaked havoc across the nation, Canadians once again rose to the occasion, giving generously at more than 2,000 kettle locations from coast to coast.”

The Salvation Army provides direct, compassionate, hands-on service to those in need across the country and around the world. Last year in Canada, The Salvation Army provided help to over 1.8 million people. Here in the Maritimes, The Army operates 33 units in 23 communities throughout the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
