Runners and walkers hit the streets and trails of the Maritimes last weekend for the annual Santa Shuffle – a 5km fun run and 1km walk.

For some teams, running a good race was second place to raising funds for The Salvation Army. In Halifax, Barb Warren’s team Never Rule Out Charity took the first-place prize for most funds raised, with $2,619.85, beating out Team Spryfield for bragging rights this year. The Halifax Santa Shuffle had over 1,100 registered participants this year, an increase of 30 per cent from last year!

Congratulations, and thank you to both Never Rule Out Charity and Team Spryfield.

In addition to Halifax, Santa Shuffles took place in 38 other communities across the country, including four others here in the Maritimes. Here’s a peek at what happened at some of those event:

    Moncton
Traditionally the second largest race in the region, Moncton had another strong turn out for 2013 with more than 350 shufflers turning up for the event. Hazel Furlong was the highest fundraising individual, collecting over $1,000 in pledges, and winning the grand prize of two tickets anywhere WestJet flies. Mona Murdock placed second with nearly $900 raised, winning a prize pack from VIA Rail. The highest fundraising team was The Salvation Army Lakeview Manor, with nearly $5,000 collected.

    Charlottetown
The only Santa Shuffle on the Island saw an increase in runners and walkers this year, growing to 115 participants. Heather Walker raised the most pledges as an individual this year!

    Fredericton
New Brunswick’s capital saw its Santa Shuffle double its participation this year, with 200 shufflers out in support of The Salvation Army.
