Over 1,000 runners came out to the trails of Shubie Park on Saturday for the Santa Shuffle fun run in support of The Salvation Army.

WEB3The race was one of 39 taking place today across the country. Other locations in the Maritimes include Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John and Charlottetown.

The event in Halifax raised approximately $35,000 for The Salvation Army.

The five-kilometre course began at the Fairbanks Centre and took participants along one of the Shubenacadie Canal’s historic locks and through the trail systems, before returning again. There was also a one-kilometre course available for those looking for a smaller challenge.

The total number of participants represents the largest Santa Shuffle in HRM in the 13-year history of the event, and an increase of more than 30 per cent from last year.

WEB2The grand prize of the day, two tickets anywhere WestJet flies, courtesy of the airline, was won by Alicia Williams.

The funds raised go to Salvation Army programming here in HRM, including the Christmas support hamper program, which provided Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and gifts to over 4,600 children and their families last year alone.

“Through the support of the participants, we are able to continue to provide many families with a Christmas that they otherwise would not have,” Major Alison Cowling, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in the Maritimes said. “The funds raised by The Santa Shuffle help those in our community not only at Christmas, but year-round. Our Community Family Services work tirelessly to restore hope and dignity to those who are experiencing challenges. Emergency assistance is provided in the form of clothing, food, accommodations, life skills, life skills training and counselling.”

The event is made possible thanks to our national partners The Running Room, and local partners WestJet and Radio 96.5.
