Bio and Experience
Major Gillian Brown has been a Salvation Army Officer for 26 years. Before taking up her current position, she pastored churches in Ontario and Quebec and also spent three years in Great Britain.

Major Brown spent her childhood in India, which gave her a cross cultural experience from an early age. She has a Bachelors degree in Applied Science, Family and Nutrition and a Masters in Religion with an emphasis on multicultural and global issues.

In her role as Associate Director of World Missions, Major Brown supports Salvation Army relief projects in a number of developing countries including Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Mexico. She oversees short-term missions and facilitates team site visits around the world. Major Brown is also responsible for the Partners in Mission Campaign, an internal fund-raising campaign, and Gifts of Hope, an ethical giving catalogue.

Projects
“The Salvation Army is engaged in both short and long-term relief work. We respond to emergency situations, providing basic necessities like food, water and shelter. Longer term, our projects help provide clean and drinkable water, home based care for HIV/AIDS patients, support for orphans and vulnerable children, women’s empowerment training and lessons in microcredit.”

A World of Service
“Each of the dozens of projects we are involved in around the world supports the Army’s mission to meet human needs. We support projects in areas as diverse as China, South America, Mexico, Liberia, Tanzania, Malawi, Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and Macau. We try to respond to areas undergoing great change or in great crisis. For example, following the 2005 tsunami, The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory took the lead in helping Southeast Asia rebuild.”

Public awareness
“People don’t realize how much work The Salvation Army does around the world. While there are always needs in Canada, it’s about finding the right balance between our domestic and international work.

Partners in Mission
“The Salvation Army has a presence in 118 countries and counting, providing opportunities for mutual support as partners in mission. With Salvation Army ministry in so many countries we are able to move quickly in providing the necessary support when crisis or disaster strikes, partner together on long-term development projects, offer opportunities for short-term mission, and funding through Gifts of Hope”

The Salvation Army
“I’m very committed to keeping the Army strong and visible and on the cutting edge … so that we remain relevant to the day and age in which we live.”
