Thank you to our partners TELUS who sponsored a new 5 ton truck for The Salvation Army Harbour Light via the 1st Annual Hope in the Inner City: Soup Kitchen Gala.

The gala took place at Harbour Light, located at 119 East Cordova and featured an evening of appetizers, live music, a silent auction and dinner created by Karen Barnaby of The Fish House in Stanley Park. The program also acknowledged the contributions of a successful client and corporate partner, TELUS, through the presentation of the Life Changer Award.

Through this new truck, The Salvation Army is better equipped and further able to help those in our communities with efficiency and ease. The truck will be used for deliveries and pick ups all across the Lower Mainland. Not to mention, as the unit is refrigerated and equipped with a power tailgate along with an overall capacity haul of 8 – 10 skids of product at one time … The Salvation Army Harbour Light is able to meet all refrigeration requirements and standards for products such as meats, yogurts, and other dairy items.

Thank you TELUS.

We look forward to this year’s gala which will be held on May 10th.

With snow on the ground and a winter chill in the air, The Salvation Army’s Addictions and Rehabilitation Centre hosted its annual “post-Christmas Christmas Dinner” on Thursday, January 19th.

Organizers were expecting anywhere from 250-350 people to come in and enjoy the turkey feast with all the trimmings, however an amazing 550 people came in to dine with us.

It has been a tradition of The Salvation Army to serve a Christmas meal for our clients; however, due to the amount of feasts offered in Victoria around December 25th, we decided to move ours to mid-January to better serve this population. This enables our clients to enjoy all the special meals in the city instead of choosing one over the other. It also extends the Christmas spirit into the New Year providing a sense of community and friendship in one of the bleaker months on the calendar.

We would like to thank all the community partners who came together to make this meal a possibility, including the students of the culinary program at Camosun College along with all our volunteers and our kitchen staff.

If asked to describe the Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign in Nanaimo, in one word, that would be “amazing” as shared by Dawne Anderson . “It is the only word that comes to mind,” she said. “It’s amazing knowing our community supports the work the Salvation Army does, and it’s amazing the amount of volunteer support we receive.” The campaign ran Nov. 21 to Dec. 24, raising $212,000 from 24 kettles inNanaimo and Ladysmith. More money is expected through mail-in donations. The 2010 campaign raised $193,000. Anderson’s goal was $200,000, but she had concerns it would not be achieved as the campaign was $3,500 behind its goal on Dec. 22. “In the last two days $15,000 came in. It was amazing,” she said. “People were feeling that Christmas spirit.” Volunteer numbers totalled 975, up from 850 last year, with individuals, service groups, sports teams and businesses taking shifts to collect donations.

“There’s no way to properly thank all the volunteers,” saidAnderson. “Some took one shift, some took daily shift, people gave what they could give.” Proceeds from the campaign go toward the work at the Salvation Army’s New Hope Centre. “It’s not just for food hampers,” said Anderson. “It goes to the meal program, emergency shelter, family services and counselling.” And even though the campaign was a success, Andersonsaid there is still a need for more. “It seems like a lot of money, and is a lot of money, but it doesn’t go too far,” she said. “It gives us a good kick-start, but there is still a need to raise money throughout the year.”

Gaining more support and momentum year after year, last year’s 2011 Hope in the City Luncheon was no exception in being the largest most well attended event in its capacity to date.

This annual fundraiser benefits The Salvation Army’s fight against human sexual trafficking and raised $110,000 to provide support and a safe environment for survivors of exploitation and human sexual trafficking.

Over 450 guests attended this year’s event, representing a business savvy, philanthropic, community-minded, influential and affluentVancouverdemographic.

Funds raised over the last seven years were critical in opening a safe house for survivors, the first of its kind in Canada. Through the support of those who care, Deborah’s Gate can continue to provide safe shelter and supportive recovery in a dignified and non-judgemental environment.

Thank you to MC, Tamara Taggart and expert speakers, Benjamin Perrin and MP Joy Smith.

Your generosity helps us in our continued fight to DO SOMETHING.

In December, local organization BOB recognized fellow agency — The Salvation Army Belkin House — for their outstanding contribution in the consistent improvement to the lives of local residents along with the spirit of communication and cooperation shown.

Thank you to BOB for taking the time to acknowledge Belkin House for their great work in the community by providing housing and transitional assistance to those who need it.

The Salvation Army Belkin House works in partnership with BOB by lending referrals to BOB’s program and by helping those who need it in our local communities.

About Bob:

Based inVancouver, British Columbia, Building Opportunities with Business (BOB) is a non-profit organization with the goal to support local business development and increase job opportunities for inner-city residents. The inner-city communities encompassVancouver’s birthplace and include Chinatown, Strathcona, Oppenheimer,Victory Square, Gastown,Mount Pleasantand Downtown South. Rich in history, these important neighbourhoods offer numerous parks and public spaces, they contain creative and cultural districts, posses heritage structures and key infrastructure assets and most importantly of all a diverse and talented multi-cultural population. The downtown eastside has known prosperity but has seen economic decline over the years.

Today, revitalization and regeneration is occurring in the downtown eastside. Residents, businesses, community groups, governments and myriad organizations are working together to ensure that the local residents and businesses benefit from this renewed interest and investment in the area. BOB, along with our partners, is championing this Revitalization Without Displacement, or as it is also referred to, Inclusive Revitalization.
