Clean up & Restoration | There to support people as they rebuild after a disaster, when need and resources warrant, The Salvation Army will distribute clean-up kits which include many supplies needed to clean-up and restore disaster damaged homes.
Community Response Units | For 125 years, EDS has been on scene and service whenever there has been a natural or man-made disaster – always ready to assist during emergencies by providing mobile feeding units, shelter, spiritual ministry, along with the distribution of necessary supplies. The Salvation Army Community Response Units in BC are one of the first to arrive and the last to leave. Our assistance is long term, through the critical disaster phase and well after the tragedy: rebuilding communities, families and lives.
Donations Management & Assistance | The Salvation Army is a leader in collecting, sorting and distributing donated goods, and dispenses necessary items such as clothing directly to disaster victims.
Emergency Feeding | This is one of the most visible programs offered by EDS in the community that includes provision of hot meals and beverages to disaster victims and emergency workers. Over a thousand meals can be prepared and served daily through our mobile kitchen units.
Emergency Shelter Assistance | During or following a major disaster, The Salvation Army may open disaster relief shelters specifically for evacuees and other disaster survivors who have nowhere else to turn.
Intervention & Spiritual Care | Upon request, crisis counselling is available to provide comfort and emotional support to disaster victims and EDS workers coping with the stress and heartache of a disaster. The Salvation Army is also on hand with pastoral care by providing chaplaincy presence among those coping with the aftermath of a disaster.
Support Workers | EDS provides trained on-site personnel who provide logistic support, labour and support to evacuees during a disaster.
Training | EDS offers volunteer training for emergency disaster services across British Columbia. This training is meant to build sustainable communities, that may be able to cope during times of crisis.
International Partnerships | The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters delegates Emergency Response Resources worldwide. As a result, EDS is able to impact the welfare of communities not only within British Columbia but nationally and internationally. For instance, in recent years with areas of southern Alberta devastated by flooding, the Abbotsford Salvation Army’s emergency disaster services unit set off for Calgary to assist those affected by the disaster. Units from three other communities in BC – Terrace, Kelowna and Prince George –also assited Alberta. Other recent EDS partnerships include supporting:
Typhoon victims in Philippines | Tornado survivors in Alabama, Mississippi & Tennessee Earthquake casualties in Haiti & Nepal | Ebola affected communities in Liberia & Sierra Leone | Fire Response in Ontario, Australia & Texas | Flood victims in Alberta, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka & Malaysia.
