A beautiful Vancouver day welcomed the 27th Annual Shaughnessy Women’s Charity Golf Tournament supporting The Salvation Army Kate Booth House.

Over 130 golfers participated in this year’s event, raising dollars and awareness for Kate Booth House – a shelter for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence.

Golfers and guests were privileged to hear from a very special woman, Teresa, a mother to two daughters who was once sheltered at Kate Booth House and who bravely chose to share her experiences.

Poorly treated by her own mother, Teresa was considered the black sheep of her family, routinely struck, and saddled with the most household work and demeaning tasks.  Teresa vowed to escape her abuse at an early age and chose a husband at age 27 that was good to her, bought her nice things and praised her looks and personality.  She was sure he was the right choice.

Having two daughters was a rude awakening to the real character of her husband, who, although he left Teresa alone, began systematically abusing her eldest daughter.  Finally, and bravely, she chose to leave him, only to be struck herself, hospitalized and through the police, found a safe haven at Kate Booth House for herself and her daughters.

Teresa was overwhelmed by her beautiful accommodations, as Kate Booth House wants all to feel safe and cared for.  There was proper schooling for her daughters, counselling for herself and her children along with guidance for preparing a safe, successful return to community.

She now has an excellent career in sales and marketing and provides a loving and nurturing home for her girls.  She had vowed not to let the cycle of abuse continue and thanks to Kate Booth House and her bravery, she is succeeding.

Thank you to all those who participated in the event and for your contributions.  Your generous donations continue to help those, like Teresa, who are impacted by domestic violence in our local community.  Together, we can make a difference.
