World’s Largest Kettle Kicks Off Salvation Army Christmas Campaign

On November 18, The Salvation Army in Toronto officially launched its Christmas Campaign with the World’s Largest Kettle. Measuring 8’ in diameter and 5’10” in height, the 2,800 pound red, tin-like kettle can hold $800,000 in quarters and was brought in from Ohio specifically for the launch.

It was a damp, chilly morning and while guests enjoyed free coffee, tea and hot chocolate, Christmas music was provided by the Army’s Christmas brass ensemble and carolling group. In addition, the Raptors Dance Pak performed a variety of numbers and corporate donations were made by Kisko and Hotspex.

In the Greater Toronto Area Salvation Army kettles are manned by more than 2,000 bell-ringers in 400 stores and shopping centres. The fundraising objective this year is $3 million.

Says Captain John Murray, Divisional Secretary for Public Relations and Development: “Each year The Salvation Army is thankful to the generosity of so many in our community who support our annual campaign. This support provides practical help that changes lives… and also gives people a sense of newfound dignity.”
