The Salvation Army Raises Over $650,000 for Alberta Fire Response

Edmonton, May 13, 2016 – The Salvation Army has now raised $651,524 for the Alberta fire response efforts. While The Salvation Army is still serving food to some of the first responders, we are experiencing increased demand for our assistance from Fort McMurray evacuees across the province. Our community and social service programs are distributing food, clothing and other items to help people with immediate and pressing needs. If people require assistance, The Salvation Army is available to help based on people’s needs and our capacity to serve.   

Our thrift stores in Alberta are also giving out clothing to people from Fort McMurray. Due to depleting stocks of inventory, we are now requesting donations of clothing, bedding, linens, furniture and household goods at our thrift stores in Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary. This is to replenish supplies given out to Fort McMurray evacuees.

The public can still help with relief efforts through monetary donations. Donations can be made at SalvationArmy.ca/albertafires or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY. A $10 donation can be made by texting FORTMAC to 45678. 

The Salvation Army has operated our community and social programs in Fort McMurray since 1979 and will continue to be an active and supportive presence in the city. Given the harrowing and traumatic experiences that many Fort McMurray residents have gone through, we encourage all Canadians to continue keeping this community in your thoughts and prayers in the days and months ahead.
