Salvation Army Responds to B.C. Wildfires

As of Monday morning, more than 10,000 people have been evacuated in B.C.s interior due to a weekend of multiple wildfires, road closures, evacuations and a provincial state of emergency.

Salvation Army emergency response units and crews remain on the scene in several locations providing food, hydration and emotional and spiritual support to first responders and evacuees.

In Williams Lake the team provided 750 meals Saturday with an additional 1,000 on Sunday. The team in Prince George partnered with local restaurants and provided in excess of 450 meals and thousands of evacuees continue to enter the city. In Kamloops the team met and greeted an estimated 3,500 evacuees from Cache Creek, supplying hydration and emotional support and in Kelowna, the team is providing reception centre support to evacuees from a large apartment fire.

“It is our mission to offer hope and practical support in the midst of challenging circumstances,” says John McEwan, The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services Director for British Columbia. “Thank you to all who partner with us to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of people.”
