New Food Bank Program Increases Dignity

It’s a one-of-a-kind in Windsor, Ont.
The Salvation Army food bank has changed the way it hands out food and is now offering a shopping-like experience to its visitors.
“It goes down to the dignity of being able to shop, as opposed to receiving a handout,” says Perron Goodyear of The Salvation Army.
Clients are given the opportunity to choose their own items from the food bank, which now includes fresh vegetables.
The change in distribution also means that people like Joseph can pick rice and bread instead of pasta, which he left behind for others.
More than 670 households use The Salvation Army food bank each month.
