“Richmond Hill, Ont., is listed as one of the fastest growing and culturally diverse communities in Canada,” says Matt Delaney, sports and recreation outreach coordinator and restorative justice facilitator for The Salvation Army in Richmond Hill.

“In a 2006 Canadian census, there were a reported 11 visible minority groups and 13 religious groups that made up the town of Richmond Hill.  These numbers are rapidly increasing, with the population expected to pass the 200,000 mark by 2015.

“With these numbers comes a fast growing diversity of needs.  The Salvation Army is committed to meeting these needs as we build relationships with our town’s most marginalized families and students.

“One way we are doing this is through our partnership with York Region District School Board. Through the keen insight and direction of YRDSB schools, we are engaged in working with vulnerable families and at-risk students; each with their own unique set of needs.

“With changing community dynamics and increased economic stress on school systems and families, The Salvation Army has stepped in to help where we can by one-on-one mentoring, coaching, counselling, sport specific groups/leagues, and restorative justice initiatives that bring healing to students in conflict. We are key advocates in the lives of students.

Testimonials

Elementary School student:  “DropZone is my favorite part of the week.  I love learning more about hockey and meeting new friends.”

Mother of two:  “The Salvation Army has been involved in our children’s school and also helped send them to camp for a week this summer.  It was the best week of their lives filled with hockey, activities and spirituality.  Words really can’t express the impact The Salvation Army has made on me and my kids.”

High school social worker:  “For over five years now I have seen The Salvation Army offer a wide variety of services such as coaching, one on one student support and restorative justice circles.  Their dedication and influence is essential to the health of our students and the health of our community.”

Elementary School Principal:  “We have had a partnership with Matt and The Salvation Army for four years now and have seen the positive impact it has on our students. We’ve watched our students develop their relationship skills, leadership skills, character traits, team work, and problem-solving skills. The DropZone is one of our most valuable programs that contribute to student engagement.”

High School Vice-Principal:  “Mr. Delaney has supported our at-risk students in a variety of ways. He helps students build positive relationships by acting as a mentor, helps students to make responsible decisions, and keeps students connected to the school and to the community.”

“We are grateful for and continue to rely on the financial generosity of others to ensure we can maintain a growing presence in the lives of vulnerable families and students,” says Matt. “Without this support we would be unable to provide essential services that our partners so desperately require.”
