Throughout the summer months teens affected by Asperger’s syndrome volunteered at The Salvation Army thrift store in Bathurst, N.B. From sorting books to hanging and sorting clothes, giving back not only made the teens feel good, it bridged communication gaps they sometimes struggle with.

As part of a summer camp program at the Autism and Asperger Family Centre, Inc. teens volunteered in the community every week with the purpose of helping them overcome social challenges and motivate them to interact with the people they are volunteering for.

“Volunteering gives the kids a sense of responsibility and work ethic. It teaches them to be polite and introduce themselves,” says summer student Melissa.

Pierre, 18, says he has already noticed a difference in his social behavior.
