Food Bank Encourages Nutritious Donations

Pasta and cheese are common donations at food banks. These and many other foods received are high in sugar, salt and starch, which are unhealthy.

The Salvation Army in Midland, Ontario, is trying to change lives by encouraging donations that can improve the health of clients using the food bank. Healthy donations, such as whole grain pasta rather than white, canned tuna, ham, kidney beans, stewed tomatoes, and canned fruits in their own juices rather than sugar, will support local people who have financial and other barriers to choosing healthy food.

For a long time food banks offered food with little thought to the nutritional elements. While it is true that when you are hungry any food is good, we can be part of giving the gift of health by choosing to give healthy foods to those who are hungry.
