Fort McMurray Community Continues to Support One Another


It has been one year since the wildfire called ‘The Beast’ raged through Fort McMurray burning 5,000 square kilometres, destroying 2,400 structures, and leaving thousands homeless.

Much has changed in Fort McMurray since the entire city was evacuated. Roughly 15,000 people have not returned to the community and for those who have returned, the psychological impacts of going through such a traumatic event are still being felt.

“As the community moves from response to re-entry to recovery and rebuilding, the local Salvation Army in Fort McMurray is beginning to consider and anticipate community needs,” says Captain Mark Stanley from The Salvation Army in Alberta.

As of July 4, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry classified the wildfire as under control, completely contained and will be extinguished. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people evacuated have returned to their homes. With this in mind, The Salvation Army has identified three key goals.

    It was a picture perfect, hot summer day on June 7 as 156 golfers teed off at Highlands Golf Course in Edmonton for the 14th Annual Supreme Group Salvation Army Golf Classic.     As residents of Fort McMurray, Alberta have begun re-entering their city after the wildfire forced them to evacuate, The Salvation Army is there to help welcome them back. Sixty Salvation Army volunteers from across Alberta were on hand to help set up welcome stations at the seven re-entry Information Centres around the city.     Salvation Army Responds To Fort McMurray Fire


    The Salvation Army is deploying two Community Response Units to assist with feeding 800 first responders engaged in the Fort McMurray fire response efforts. Two additional response units are preparing to arrive in the area in the next 24 hours.

    All Salvation Army Officers and staff in Fort McMurray were safely evacuated to several different locations yesterday. There is no information on the status of Salvation Army properties in Fort McMurray.

    The sun was shining at this year’s ‘Get Ready in the Park’ Emergency Preparedness event in Edmonton on May 9th, as thousands of people visited displays, booths, and presentations put on by various emergency agencies, including The Salvation Army.

    The cold weather didn’t prevent Calgarians from showing up in large numbers to learn about the wide range of disaster services offered during the 2014 City of Calgary Disaster Alley. Over 1,800 people braved the cold temperatures at McMahon Stadium to experience Calgary’s largest preparedness event showcasing over 30 Agencies who assist in emergencies and disasters.
