Salvation Army Programs Helped Newcomers Adjust

Settling in Calgary brought many new challenges for Gladys and her family. Originally from Nigeria, they had immigrated to the UK, but with high unemployment and uncertainty, they decided to move to Canada to raise their little girl.

“Starting over again was hard,” says Gladys. “The high cost of shipping forced us to leave most of our belongings behind. We had no family or friends in Calgary and had to learn how to embrace a new culture. I had a lot […]

Play Café Is A Lifesaver For Parents

Giggles and the patter of running feet can be heard as soon as you enter the doors to Berkshire Citadel in Calgary. Play Café is well underway as parents and toddlers make playdough structures, experiment with glitter, and mingle with one another.

“I really look forward to coming, I actually structure my week around it,” says mother and UK native Natalie. “I don’t have a car, so having something like this within walking distance in our community has been lifesaving for […]

Agapé Hospice volunteer with resident

Why I Love Wednesdays

As I walk across the park on my way to The Salvation Army Agapé Hospice, I prepare for the day ahead. I never know what I’ll be doing on my favourite day of the week, but I know that a certain mind set – or should I say “heart set” – is the secret to making it a good one.

I get a cup of coffee and make my way to “Huddle” – a time when volunteers and employees spend a […]

Food Sharing Program In Calgary Helps Stretch Food Dollars

On the first Monday of each month, Carolyn Jonsson, Manager for Adult Education at Community Services Calgary, heads to the wholesaler to do some grocery shopping. 5 Loaves & 2 Fish is a food-sharing program that allows individuals and families to enjoy the financial benefits of bulk-buying. […]

The toy warehouse in Calgary

Bringing Smiles To Children’s Faces

Last Friday, the Calgary Public Relations & Development team was at The Salvation Army warehouse to assist with unloading, counting, and sorting the toys that were collected at Calgary Police Service locations as part of the Toy Angels campaign. In all, over 1100 toys filled the bins waiting to be selected by volunteers to bring joy to a child on Christmas morning.

Also on display at the warehouse was the spirit of giving that exists in our community. The challenging economic […]

Angels In The Night

In the dark of the Calgary night on December 8, thirty-five Angels in the Night volunteers form a line from the delivery truck in the back alley to the sorting room at the Centre of Hope. They pass socks, work boots, gloves, underwear, and work pants down the line until the truck is empty. The Angels are employees and friends of Invis and Mortgage Intelligence and this is their 13th year of helping homeless shelters in several cities across Canada.

Skid Row CEO Shares Inspirational Story at Luncheon

Calgary’s Christmas Kettle Campaign kicked off at the Hope in the City luncheon on November 26 with an inspirational message from Mr. Joe Roberts, the Skid Row CEO. Mr. Roberts described his childhood and family life as something out of a TV-sitcom until his father died suddenly when he was eight years old. Struggling to cope with his father’s death and his mother’s remarriage, Joe turned to drugs for the first time at age nine. This began a 15 year […]

Sharing Warmth and Smiles

There were a lot of smiles and thank you’s as Calgarians left The Centre of Hope and Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre this week in their new winter coats. This year’s 13th Annual Salvation Army Coat Drive at the Calgary Stampeders game on October 31 was another record breaker! Over 5,100 new and gently used coats were donated by Calgary Stampeders fans, Q107 listeners and Calgary schools. Those coats were distributed to people in need from November 16 to 18.

“Thousands […]

Stampede Parade 2015

Participating in the Stampede Parade is a Summer Tradition

On a beautiful, sunny Friday in July, the Glenmore Temple Band marched in its 101st Calgary Stampede Parade!  New Glenmore Temple Corps Officers, Majors Guy and Donna Simms, had arrived in Calgary just days earlier to learn that their first Stampede experience would have them in the parade – not just watching it! “This is so exciting,” mused Major Donna, “We get to see over 200,000 people today in the streets of downtown Calgary.” Both Majors were also taking the ‘welcome […]
