Hope is in the City of Edmonton

The Salvation Army launched its Christmas Kettle Campaign at the Third Annual Hope in the City Breakfast on Friday, November 14, 2014 with the first official donations from members of their Edmonton Advisory Board. Meeting this year’s $545,000 campaign goal allows The Salvation Army’s Community and Family Services in Edmonton to provide food hampers, Christmas assistance, senior programs, school supplies for struggling families, children’s camps, and more in 2015. Forty percent of Community and Family Services operating budget comes from the Christmas Kettle Campaign, and last year 46,897 families received food hampers because of the generous support from donors, and dedicated volunteers who gently rang the kettle bell.

David Dickinson, Executive Director of Community and Family Services, reminded donors and volunteers in his moving speech that they “…are the one’s making a difference and changing lives, The Salvation Army is merely the instrument.” You may never meet the families whose Christmas you made possible, the families you helped put food on the table for, the homeless individuals you gave a warm breakfast to, the seniors you gave an afternoon of lunch and socialization to, or the local students you gave school supplies to – however, The Salvation Army sees the difference you’re making every day. “Words cannot express how grateful we, and our clients, are for these donations.” Dickinson, said.

Guest speaker Crystal Flaman, social entrepreneur and author, provided attendees an inspirational speech encouraging them to chase their dreams, no matter how big or small. Achieving any goal starts with putting one foot in front of the other, a similar message The Salvation Army conveys to all clients; a series of small steps carries you to your desired reality.

The Hope in the City Breakfast raised over $40,000 to kick off this year’s Christmas Kettle Campaign. Special thank-you to our Platinum sponsor, Flaman Group of Companies and Flaman Foundation, as well as our Bronze sponsor, Sorrell Financial.

The Salvation Army depends on generous donors and dedicated volunteers to help them provide year-round programs and services. There are many ways that you can help them Give Hope Today, whether it’s making a donation or volunteering just a few hours of your time. Donations can be made at any of the many Christmas Kettles located across Edmonton, by visiting www.fillthekettle.com, or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY. To volunteer, please call 780-423-2111.
