Edmonton Community Christmas Dinner Serves 650


650 men, women and children in Edmonton received a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings at the Annual Christmas Community Dinner on December 5, 2012. Each year Executive Director, Capt. Mark Stanley, and staff from the Addictions & Residential Centre (ARC) put on the dinner for anyone who would like to attend, and to make sure everyone gets to have a Christmas meal. Operation Fruit Rescue Donates to Salvation Army


For many people on a tight budget, fresh produce is often too expensive and out of reach. On Friday, October 19th, Riverbend Gardens announced they had surplus vegetables to harvest, and Operation Fruit Rescue heard the call. It was a nice fall day for harvesting vegetables from the garden when Operation Fruit Rescue helped pick surplus vegetables for The Salvation Army’s food bank.

Coming Home to The Salvation Army


“It feels a lot safer here,” says Bev who’s just recently checked into the Women’s Integrated Supportive Housing (WISH) in Calgary. The WISH centre provides support services for women such as emergency and transitional beds plus a variety of skill building programs. Prior to arriving at WISH Bev was sleeping in her car. “Coming here was like a weight off my shoulders.”

Backpacks for Kids Program Struggling to Meet Demand


With the first day of classes fast approaching, a large number of Calgary parents are without enough money for school supplies. Families who are receiving support through The Salvation Army social service programs rely heavily on the Backpacks for Kids program to ensure their children’s education is met with success. Last year the program distributed 1020 backpacks. Due to a sharp increase in demand, school supplies are running low leaving the program in critical need of donations.

Going Back in Time For Edmonton’s Capital Ex Parade


 On July 19, 2012 The Salvation Army in Edmonton entered a float in the Capital Ex Parade that captured the ‘Now and Then’ of our famous Christmas Kettles.With the expert help from Supreme Group, we had a replica kettle stand for our ‘Then’ kettle – very well done! We even had a few old fashioned dressed band members as well, with a replica of an actual kettle sign.
