October 26, 2013, wasn’t just another Saturday for The Salvation Army – it was a day full of strategy, fun, laughter, fellowship, and food all for a good cause. The 20th Annual Harvest Brunch & Auction raised just over $66,000 towards an industrial kitchen for Edmonton Community Crossroads. Crossroads operates outreach programs in an inner city area well known for homelessness, prostitution, and drug use.

The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team is getting plenty of opportunity to be of service this year. On Wednesday, September 11, The Salvation Army in Calgary was called into action after a CP train carrying a flammable liquid used in oil pipelines derailed. Eight rail cars left the tracks and six flipped on their side. A natural gas line also ruptured during the incident.

1,000 donuts, 1,000 smiles, and a day of sunshine… that’s what we call a successful Donut Day! Situated in historic Fort Edmonton Park, The Salvation Army set up on the train platform and greeted visitors of the park with smiles and free donuts to celebrate 120 years in Edmonton. Serving donuts also commemorates a Salvation Army tradition dating back to 1917, during the First World War when Salvation Army volunteers made donuts to boost morale of troops on the front lines.
