Often when times are tough, we see the best come out in our communities and Grande Prairie, Alberta is no exception. This September marked the 20th anniversary of local Rotary clubs holding a large-scale food drive for The Salvation Army, and the community support was tremendous.

The official kick-off on September 8 saw 32 local business and individual sponsors, assisted by students from four school districts, raise $9,600 for the food drive! That total is up from last year's $3,500 and demonstrates this community's commitment to ensuring that families have food on the table during these difficult economic times.

“With the economic down turn we are finding that there are more and more new people accessing The Salvation Army Food Bank,” says Lt. Peter Kim, Salvation Army Community Ministries Officer. “We are thankful that this has not stopped the generosity within the City to give even when times are tough.”

On September 13, over 700 volunteers went door-to-door to pick up 46.5 tons of food in just four hours! Teams of volunteers, including some hockey teams and Air Cadets, used their vehicles to collect the food and bring it to The Salvation Army Food Bank.

The people of Grande Prairie did something exceptional for their neighbours, rallying behind those struggling with food security and delivering hope. Thank you to all the businesses and people who sponsored the kick-off, the volunteers who collected the donations, and everyone who made this event such a success.
