As residents of Fort McMurray, Alberta have begun re-entering their city after the wildfire forced them to evacuate, The Salvation Army is there to help welcome them back. Sixty Salvation Army volunteers from across Alberta were on hand to help set up welcome stations at the seven re-entry Information Centres around the city. Volunteers offered fresh coffee, snacks, and fruit for anyone who came by. They were greeted with a smile, a friendly “welcome back!” and an opportunity to chat and decompress.

The Centres are a one-stop shop for residents who need to talk with ATCO about getting their gas re-hooked up, pick up a cleaning kit, grab a case of bottled water, and have the opportunity to talk to someone about what they’re going through. Many shared some of their evacuation experiences with volunteers, and expressed their relief to be back and their concerns about the future. Many residents were just in town to check on their property and assess what needs to be done before bringing their families back, while others were looking for new accommodations as they had lost their homes.

The Salvation Army will also be assisting with chaplaincy for residents who have lost their homes and will be visiting them for the first time.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the fire response. Your generosity allows us to help those who have experienced severe trauma and loss, and to continue to Give Hope Today.
