The Coldest Night of the Year walking fundraiser in Yellowknife raised over $21,000 toward renovating the kitchen at the Men’s Emergency Shelter.

“This is the third year that we were part of The Coldest Night of the Year event that happens in communities across Canada,” said Lt. Dusty Sauder, Executive Director of the NWT Resource Centre. “It was great to see people from the community come out and participate and raise money to support the shelter.”

The Salvation Army’s Men’s Emergency Shelter in Yellowknife provides a vital service as it is the only men’s shelter in the city. The 49 bed shelter often operates at or near capacity and in 2015 provided 13,126 bed nights for those who would not otherwise have a place to stay. The shelter’s kitchen prepares lunch and supper daily for Yellowknifers in need of a meal.

“The kitchen renovations are so needed,” added Lt. Sauder. “Thank you to everyone who walked and donated for making this possible.”
