2013 was a difficult and challenging year for Albertans. In June and July, the great Alberta floods devastated and ravished communities across Southern Alberta. Thousands were displaced and the monumental task of rebuilding their lives seemed insurmountable. In the midst of the flood disaster, The Salvation Army gathered it’s forces and provided food, hydration, clothing, and spiritual care to those in need.

“The effects of the floods are long-term,” explains Captain Pam Goodyear, Divisional Secretary of Public Relations & Development for The Salvation Army. “Substantial monetary donations are critical to our operations and make it possible for us to provide the basic necessities to those in need during, and after a disaster.”

Husky Energy has played a critical role in supporting the work of The Salvation Army throughout Alberta. A number of cash donations have been made to various Salvation Army ministry units; In 2013 and 2014 Husky Energy donated $158,000, plus an additional $21,000 from their “Employee Campaign Program”. Donations are being used to help with flood relief efforts as well as supporting food banks and other Salvation Army services across the province.

The sizable donations from Husky Energy and other generous donors are not just for helping people in times of disaster, but also for the everyday tragedies that people are facing; issues regarding lack of food and insufficient funds to cover high utility bills.

“In the last few weeks we’ve seen an increase in the number of people accessing our food bank, as well as requesting financial help to pay for high utilities due to extreme cold weather,” says Lieutenant Dusty Sauder of The Salvation Army in Drumheller.

“We’re a small ministry unit caring for a large community here in Drumheller,” explains Sauder, “so it’s encouraging to have companies like Husky Energy come through with donations that help support our work.”
