Hundreds of men gathered outside The Salvation Army Centre of Hope on Monday, November 4, 2013 to receive a warm coat from The Salvation Army. Calgary Stampeders, Drew Tate and Brandon Smith stopped by and helped many of the men find just the right coat. As the men passed through the building’s chapel, some were lucky enough to walk away with an autographed Stampeders jacket.

“It has been a record year for coat donations,” explains Karen Livick, Executive Director of Community Services (Calgary). “But perhaps the most rewarding part for Salvation Army staff and volunteers is to hear the words “thank you” from our city’s less fortunate as they pick out a warm coat.”

The Salvation Army Calgary Stampeders Coat Drive collected over 4000 coats this year. It was an overwhelming response from football fans, combined with a media campaign successfully lead by morning radio hosts, Jeff and Sarah, from Calgary’s Classic Rock Q 107, which greatly contributed to the success of the campaign.

Every year dedicated volunteers get involved in the coat drive because they recognize the importance of keeping Calgary’s impoverished warm throughout the winter.

“It’s just wonderful for the guys to have so many coats to choose from,” says volunteer Michele Campbell. “They like to be able to choose what coat is best for them, plus the quality of the coats donated this year was excellent!”

“The Salvation Army wishes to thank everyone involved in this year’s coat drive,” expresses Livick. “Keeping Calgary’s less fortunate warm over the winter is no easy task, but just look at all these coats, it’s a clear sign that Calgarians really care about the people we serve.”
