The Grand Opening of The Salvation Army’s Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre

The long anticipated cutting of the red ribbon brought a roar of cheers from a large crowd gathered for the grand opening of the new Salvation Army Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre in Calgary. On Monday, October 7, 2013, Calgary’s Mayor, Naheed Nenshi, and Eliza Mitchell from The W. Garfield Weston Foundation were joined by Salvation Army staff to celebrate the opening and dedication. The building, formerly known as The Salvation Army Children’s Village, has just undergone a major renovation which includes a new kitchen,  a stylish and attractive new entrance and reception area, new paint inside and out, and numerous other upgrades.

“The open concept design, along with the amazing new kitchen creates an attractive new work place, and at the same time, produces many high functioning work and learning areas,” explains Karen Livick, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Community Services Calgary. “It’s comforting to know that as we grow and expand our programs at the centre, we will have the means to support the families and individuals that need our help.”

The much needed improvements at the centre, along with funding for several years of programs, were made possible in part by a sizeable donation of 1.1 million dollars from the W. Garfield Weston Foundation. The Weston family have supported The Salvation Army for over 40 years. The Facility is named after the late Barbara Mitchell and will carry on her legacy of supporting organizations that care for people in need.

The Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre is conscious that a united family is the foundation on which society is built. The Centre offers a variety of programs including: Computer Literacy, Education and Employment Preparation, Support Services, Positive Parenting, and seasonal vacation bible schools. The Salvation Army is excited to announce a number of new programs which help newcomers to Canada learn about and succeed in our culture and society, along with reading classes for children, and Family Fridays – a variety of activities held every Friday night that provide families the opportunity to come together, unwind and spend quality time with each other.
