The Salvation Army kettles are a familiar sight in malls, supermarkets and businesses during the Christmas season, and this year in Edmonton things really started off with a bang – or a rather a ‘ring’!

On the morning of November 19, 2012, The Salvation Army in Edmonton held their first Hope in the City breakfast to kick-off the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign in hopes of raising $500,000 by December 24th. That’s 5 weeks at over 30 kettle locations – 9000 volunteer hours are needed to fulfill this goal, and this breakfast was a great start.

With the help of local businesses and supporters, there were bills being dropped in the many kettles on hand, but nothing quite captured the spirit of Christmas like Mayor Mandel making his donation, and then hearing a yell from the back of the room of, “a hundred!!” The Mayor was quick to offer his ‘hundred’ if the person who yelled it also donated a hundred – which he did! That started things off, followed closely by a $15,000 donation from RMS Builders Inc., to bring the total up to $34,380 in the kettles that morning, and a grand total of $100,480 with sponsorships!

Thank-you to our supporters, friends and volunteers who made this inaugural event such a success! Special thank-you to our very generous sponsors, Flaman Fitness, Supreme Group, Muth Electrical and Pro-V Mfg.

Salvation Army volunteers will be at the kettles to accept donations until December 24th, and envelopes will be on hand for those who would like a tax receipt for their donation. Donations can also be made 24/7 by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY, online at FillTheKettle.com, or texting HOPE2001 to 45678 to make a $5 donation in Edmonton. Please see our website, SalvationArmy.ca/alberta for the text to donate codes for all participating cities in Alberta & the Northern Territories.
