The Salvation Army in Canada has committed $50,000 to disaster relief for the millions of people affected by widespread flooding across the Philippines. Around 80% of the country has been affected by non-stop torrents, resulting in massive devastation.

More than 2.4 million people in 144 municipalities have been affected by the weather so far and more than 3,100 homes have been damaged. While the death toll from days of heavy rains and floods in the Philippines has continued to rise forecasters are expecting even more heavy rain across the main island of Luzon.

The Salvation Army is hard at work providing food, blankets, water and sleep mats.

The impact of displacement, sickness, hunger and distress will continue to place pressure on the people of the Philippines.

The Salvation Army has been working in the Philippines since 1937 and has more than 10,000 members. Programs include child care centres, nutrition and feeding programs, micro-enterprise credit projects, HIV/Aids programs, water systems, skills training and agricultural assistance.
