I hear where you are coming from, I have thought some of the same things./selfish/ especially not next door to me.
God is dealing with me, especially on being of service to someone other that myself.
The old,the lame, the mentally challenged, this does not make my heart race at all. However I am a servant of the most High God & trust He will help me overcome my selfishness, I am His sheep & where He leads me I will follow.
I’ve lived on two streets with group homes in different cities. Were the inhabitants of the group home a problem? No, not once. Who were the problems: the organized criminals driving around shooting each other.
The selfish/self promoting/self serving side of me says, “What about the property value” and “But they may be dangerous or aggressive.”
Then there is the side of me that wants more than anything to be more like Jesus and open my heart to be kind, loving and supportive to the world that He loved so very much.
Fear is much more of a driving force, it seems, than Love and yet Love is the one thing that will outlast everything, including all my “property”. People “must” come first, especially in the heart and mind of Christians.
I have no training in addictions counselling, but those living with those who are recovering from such devistation do. All that is required of me, is to Love. If that means a ‘home’ is on my street, then I guess God is giving me opportunity to be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only.
