Program Will Offer Cooking Basics

A November Sussex N.B. Area Community Foundation grant has given support to a Salvation Army project called Sally’s Community Kitchen. This initiative is part of the Sussex Vibrant Communities Poverty Initiatives. The program is recognized as a Food Mentoring Initiative to help those living on low incomes.

The goal of Sally’s Community Kitchen is to empower individuals to build upon basic cooking skills through a hands-on cooking experience which also provides education and training in cooking, shopping, meal planning, budgeting, food safety and nutrition to enhance and improve one’s quality of life.

The Salvation Army’s objective is to provide an opportunity for single moms and those living on low incomes to learn how to better live within their budgets and to provide healthy nutritious meals for their families. They hope to do this by: Teaching how and where to shop for, prepare, store and serve food.

Teaching and demonstrating the value of menu planning and helping plan more nutritious meals.Teaching how to prepare a budget and shop within it.The project will also provide an opportunity for those that take the food – safe program to earn a certificate that will assist them in gaining employment.

The project is a six week program and can accommodate eight people at a time. The Salvation Army hopes to be able to run the program twice a year.

  1. I work with Salvation Army Family Services in Smithers, BC and we are hoping to begin a basic meal planning session for our clients. Do you have any resources to pass along for us to peruse and pick and choose from? Anything would be appreciated.

    Thank you for your help.
