The man and woman are young, maybe in their early 20s. And though it’s wrong to assume anything about anyone based on how they look and what they wear, it’s hard not to conclude these two have faced more than a few obstacles along the way.
When the woman catches sight of the red Salvation Army sign, she stops and says something to the man. They stop walking, and start fishing through their pockets.
Then the woman drops the coins — a few flashes of silver darkened by circles of coppery brown — into the plastic bubble.
“The Salvation Army does good work,” she says. And she apologizes for not giving more.
