Millions are going hungry. Little rain in the last two rainy seasons has led to severe drought and famine across large parts of the Horn of Africa. With the next rainy season not due until October, the situation worsens. Reports state that Africa is undergoing its most devastating drought in 60 years.

Salvation Army teams in Uganda, Kenya West and Kenya East are involved in relief efforts. Following an extensive visit to drought-affected regions, The Salvation Army’s International Emergency Services has just returned to London, England. In consultation with the affected communities, local government and other relief agencies The Salvation Army will focus on:

• Water transportation to village areas that have no local supply
• Food distribution in villages and schools for the next three months
• Bore hole drilling and shallow well construction to ensure further water security
• Support to local health centres with sanitation and bedding materials

The scope of work identified requires funding in excess of US$1 million. The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda has assured a minimum commitment of C$250,000. Rapid response plans are underway for water tanks, bore holes to be drilled that will ensure water is available, and primary-school feeding programs.
