The Salvation Army in the Peel Region in partnership with Peel Region officials and the Red Cross are preparing to receive 1800 to 2000 evacuees from various communities in Northern Ontario. The forest fire evacuees are expected to arrive within the next 12 hours. The Salvation Army staff and volunteers along with the Red Cross and the Regional Municipality of Peel will help with the needs assessment. The Salvation Army is gathering clothing, blankets, food, baby supplies, toys and hygiene products for the evacuees of which many are women and children. The Salvation Army is capable of serving some 400 meals every hour and a half through their Emergency Disaster Services Vehicle. The Salvation Army in communities across Ontario have been put on alert and others such as Ottawa are already responding.
