As wind and rain storms continue to blast through Manitoba, severe flooding continues to affect hundreds of residences. Communities along the southeast shore of Lake Manitoba were hit hard and Salvation Army personnel provided physical and spiritual needs to those impacted.

Says Captain Les Marshall, The Salvation Army’s Divisional Secretary for Public Relations and Development: “It’s a real mess. Flooding is at unprecedented levels in the lake and houses are now islands. This past weekend we looked after 257 people in the St Laurent area as they are under mandatory evacuation.”

In addition, on Sunday afternoon The Salvation Army attended a town meeting in Woodlands with about 100 residents that are about to be evacuated. They are very frustrated and upset with government, and feel abandoned.

In both cases, The Salvation Army provided meals, emotional and spiritual care, and greeted everyone. Captain Marshall speculates that when operations reach the recovery phase, The Salvation Army will be working with 100-150 homes.

Manitoba is bracing for more flooding as another major storm brews over the province.
