Majority of Canadians Want to Keep God in Culture

A recent CBC poll asked the question “Do you believe that the word God should stay in Canadian Culture?” The feedback was overwhelming. CBC had the highest number of responses ever for one of their polls.

86% of Canadians want to keep the words “God Keep our Land” in the National Anthem. 14% of Canadians were against this.

If there are this many Canadians in favour of keeping these words, why remove them?

Will common sense prevail? Will the majority rule?

  1. Online polls are NOT scientific. It’s extremely misleading (bordering on a lie) to say that 86% of Canadians agree with that statement based on a CBC web poll. God doesn’t like lies — especially ones made in His name…

  2. Yes “God” should by all means be kept in our Canadian Culture. Down through the years we relied upon Almighty God for many things. It’s since we took prayer and bible reading out of our schools and other public places, we have seen a hugh decline in moral standards in our country and we are paying the price for it today. Remember God is still in control of this world. It is His creation and He is still at the helm of the ship regardless of what people think. If we don’t take the bull by the horn and speak out against those who want to destoy the principles upon which our country was founded upon, then our country will deteriorate further.

  3. Sorry to say, guys, but I believe this story is a hoax.

    1) I couldn’t find anything related on cbc’s own website.

    2) I found a link to snopes.com (a hoax debunker) with an identical email forward from NBC (see link). (http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/godpoll.asp)

I did a bunch of digging, and, surprisingly, found nothing more than this on either side of the issue. Based on the NBC email hoax, however, I would expect that this story is false.

Truth is important, let’s continue to handle it and God’s “word of truth” carefully. Cheers!

  4. I do not see any reference to people wanting God in the culture as part of the CBC poll. Although from my conversations with people, that is the case even if they do not go to church. I think the poll indicates that people do not want the anthem changed to accomodate inclusive gender language. Generally people know that women helped the war effort and they are included in thought and heart when they sing. Fighting these verbal battles offend many people. Many women prefer to be called Mrs. and no one asked them if being referred to as Ms. was preferred. They bear with this. How much money do we wnat to spend in minutiae. I would prefer to care for the aging population in a diginified way with the money that we have. Let us not waste resources but establish priorities.

  5. Dear Edna, I’m assuming by your name that you are a member of our elder generation. I understand that kids today do seem to be crazy and out of control compared to your era. I don’t think you can boil that down to the argument of they didn’t say a prayer in school. For that argument to hold water all kids that come out of the Catholic school system would be model citizens. I disagree with you about the moral decay of our society. I think it’s fantastic that parents feel they should talk to their kids instead of immediately turning to discipline as was accepted – that whole spare the rod spoil the child trope. That women who are in domestic violence situations aren’t expected to live with the burden because the bible says women are ruled by men. I love that Canada is a country where equality is an important ideal and that the LGBT community has the same rights as heteros. Turn to your bible if you like, but I prefer to look to myself and my society when determining what is moral and not relying on a bronze age myth that is full of violence.

  6. I don’t like getting involved in online comments, but I am always interested in how people view the bible and morality. When we as a society makes decisions, particularly moral decisions, I would hope that there is a fundamental truth behind what we decide. I hope we are not basing laws on subjective whims of our own opinions. I look at myself and I already know that we shouldn’t base morality on myself… otherwise, we’d be living in a very immoral world.

It is interesting that most of Western law is based on biblical premises, that the idea of respecting others’ property, of not murdering, of ensuring responsible drinking can be drawn from archaic writings such as Leviticus or Exodus. People misunderstand that much of the bible record what happened, not what should happen. There are laws that should be followed, and we see examples of what happens when we don’t. We see the judgment of a God who desires for people to be holy, and we see people who ignore such rules to live as they will.

Now we see people presuming that when the bible describes violence, God is teaching us to be violent. We see people reading about God’s wrath literally consuming cities and believing it was unjust or without cause. We see God’s truth showing people that they are wrong, and a complete rejection of His grace. All of this is my fault, because I don’t pray or speak enough about Him to people.

Christians are often no better than anyone else, which makes it hard to believe us. I just hope my hypocrisy doesn’t cause anyone’s unbelief.

  7. Majority of people in Nazi Germany were in support of getting rid of Jews or other races and religions. Dose that mean they were right?
Majority of Americans hate Muslims right now. Dose that mean they are right?
Majority of people in this world don’t believe i Christ. Dose that mean they are right?
Polls are just opinion of people not proven facts.

  8. How about cooling the rhetoric, and just looking at a few facts?

    (1) There WAS a CBC poll done. The CBC’s own website – http://www.cbc.ca/news/pointofview/2010/03/-intro-copy-here-do.html – shows that. BUT the question in their poll was NOT the same as that at the head of the article on this site. The actual CBC poll asked “Do you think the Canadian national anthem needs to change?” – NOT the same as the article under discussion, which reads: “Do you believe that the word God should stay in Canadian Culture?”

    (2) I have looked and searched the Internet until my poor computer mouse has become tired and wanted to quit, and have yet to find any results for that poll, 86% in favour or otherwise.

    (3) Angela Pach’s post (Sept. 22) claims that (and I quote): “CBC does have a vote place and it is still around 86%!!!” But there is no evidence given. Neither of the sites she gives show any figures or any poll results, 86% or anything else.

    (4) If you check out the Snopes article that James’s post (July 28) shows, you will find that an email with almost identical wording has been circulating since 2004 or 2006. The CBC poll date was March 3 this year (2010). Please don’t use as an excuse the charge that Snopes is run by an individual. Deal with facts; check the dates.

    (5) The weight of the evidence shows that James is correct in calling the email a hoax. And if anyone can find out the results of the real CBC poll (not the fictitious one from the email), please post it with the site address so that we can all check it (even though the question was different).

  9. Andrea Poch, you have trouble with reading comprehension. The links you gave talk about the Liberals wanting to change Canada’s anthem to have gender inclusive language (true patriot love in all of us command instead of in all thy sons), not to remove “God keep our land”.

  10. A score of 86 percent positive is very good, and we as Christians should be very thankful for that! Generally, most Canadians believe in “God.” HOWEVER, as Christians we are responsible for how our God is made to appear to non-Christians. Christians are the only Bible many people will ever “read”, and I contend we have NOT done a very good job of projecting such for some time!

Also, we should keep in mind that in a democracy, decisions are made by the majority. In the case of the national anthem issue that opinion will probably prevail. HOWEVER, in a true democracy the minority has to simultaneously be treated with respect and accommodated!!! And, that is very good because how will Christians feel if and when they (we) are in the 14 percent?

  11. I believe that Canada is a blessed country. We have not been subjected to terrorist attacks and we escaped the financial meltdown that engulfed the whole world, to mention just two of our blessings. The rest of the world hardly even knows we’re here, and that suits me fine. Canadians are loved and respected everywhere we go (with the possible exception of the US, and they don’t love anybody but themselves). I believe that if we ever remove God from our anthem we’ll be just like every other country in the world who has turned their back on God, and they are paying dearly for it. I’d be curious to know how many anthems actually pay homage to God, I’m thinking that we may be the only one, or one of very few. Please don’t ever consider removing God from the song I love, for the sake of the country I love. Even if you don’t believe in your creator, he believes in you. Must we keep breaking his heart.

  12. we should never change our traditions and anthems to please immigrants…they chose to come to this country…if they don’t like it, they have a choice to accept or leave.
