Charitable Giving: Clothing, furniture donations down

Donations are urgently needed to help the Salvation Army Thrift Store overcome an unprecedented shortage of clothing and furniture.

“We would normally have mountains of clothing. Now, we have nearly bare floors,” said thrift store manager Kathy Lippert. “It’s hard to keep up with the needs when nothing’s coming in.”

The new year has presented new challenges at the Wyandotte Street store. Usually, furniture donations are made in January, as many people will donate the items after getting new furniture around Christmas. Read full story…

  1. If you pick it up, it will come – guaranteed! You need to develop a strategy for pick up, and charge people a token amount for the pick up if less than desirable material. Use some of the income from selling it to pay for the pickups.
    Do that and the problem you have will go away!

  2. I am downsizing prior to a move out of priovince. I wish to donate with the expectation of a receipt eligible for income tax purpose. A complete bedroom set – queen size bed, 2 nighdt tables with lamps, high boy, dresser with mirror. All in next to new conditeion.   3. If you donate to a Salvation Army Thrift Store. The manager will be able to fill out the paper work that needs to be sent to head office for them to issue a tax receipt. You will need to leave your name and mailing address with the manager, and the receipt will be mailed to you.

    How does the salvation army value donations?
    I have several boys brand new winter coats still in the wrappers with the price tags on them. On your US site it values coats in perfect not worn condition at 40.00. How is it done in Canada?

  5. I am moving by january 28th. I have two sets of bedroom furniture and clothes to donate. They are still in very good condition. I will need them to be picked up no later than January 27th, 2012
