The Salvation Army in Moose Jaw is gearing up to get all its hampers ready to give to families in need this year.
Maj. Don Law, head of the city’s Salvation Army, said 580 hampers will be given out this year. 110 groups or individuals have come forward to adopt a family.
The deadline for people to receive a hamper was Friday but Law said emergency cases should continue to apply.
“I always want everyone that needs one to get one,” he said.
He said the average hamper costs $100 to put together with an extra $75 for toys for each child in a family.
This means about $58,000 is needed to fill the hampers with food and even more money is required to provide toys.
Law said items in the hampers include a turkey, dressing, bread, fresh vegetables, apples, oranges, pop, chips, cranberries and items for a good Christmas feast.

I think that Adopt a Family is a very generous and caring way that expresses the true meaning behind Christmas. It sickens me, though, to know a family that exploits the generosity of others during this time. While the mom claims they need these things for the kids, yet has enough to buy them a brand new Wii, along with other things, where so many families have to go without. Kudo’s to those that have helped families in need, and shame on those that take when they don’t need.
