November 30, 2009, London, Ontario – On November 12th the Middlesex-London Health Unit contacted The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) requesting volunteers to assist at one of the City of London’s H1N1 Vaccination Clinics the following week.
EDS personnel from London as well members of the Divisional Executive Board from Hamilton & St. Catharines (who were in town for a meeting) responded. The team assisted Health Unit personnel with crowd control, registration, and any duties required. Whether it was talking to those in line, answering questions, or just a smile, the team made a huge impact on the other staff and volunteers, as well as those attending the clinic. Many commented how great it was that The Salvation Army was there.
“It was a great opportunity to meet with people, share a smile and be a support to our community”, said Major Deb Beaupre, Executive Director of the London Village and one of the volunteers. “What a privilege to serve in this way.”
The Army’s efforts were greatly appreciated and because of the success of this first deployment assistance was requested at an additional clinic two days later and another is scheduled for later this week. In total more than 80 hours will have been given to this initiative.
In addition, EDS personnel used the Community Response Unit from London to provide hot chocolate to those waiting in line at vaccination clinics throughout the City. Once again the public was grateful that The Salvation Army was there and for the assistance given.
