Blastin’ Brass Day Camp

salvationarmy_musiccampIt’s more than summer day care. Blastin’ Brass day camp introduces kids from all walks of life to brass banding. This two-week innovative camp experience, offered by The Salvation Army in London, Ontario, fosters children’s creative, emotional and social growth at a price affordable to all income levels.

“We are meeting day care needs in our community, while introducing children to something The Salvation Army has been involved in for more than 125 years,” says Liisa Jaremko, camp co-ordinator.

“Due to the condensed concentration of the camp, kids develop skills from qualified staff that would normally take them a year of weekly half-hour instruction. Beyond the hard work learning about instruments and mouth pieces, how to play them and practice tips, we squeeze in some fun. Swimming, hot lunches together, canteen and video games all
make the camp experience a memorable one.

“At the end of the two-week program family and friends are invited to a camp recital where their children participate in solos, duets and full band ensembles. It’s incredible to witness the accomplishments of the young people.”

Blastin’ Brass Day Camp 2009 is for children grades 3-8. Session 1: July 20-31; Session 2: Aug 3-14.

All staff, paid or volunteer, are screened by police. Professionals trained in CPR, first aid and child development are on site.

“This is our second year running the camp,” continues Lisa. “The results have been staggering. Close to half of the kids who attended camp last year, with no church previous church affiliation, returned to the fall music program at The Salvation Army London Citadel. Campers and families have joined the church fellowship and are participating in music groups involved in Sunday school and church services.”

Blastin’ Brass is about sharing, learning and personal development. Last year, more than 5,000 children attended Salvation Army camps across Canada where they had opportunities to grow physically, intellectually socially and spiritually.

The Salvation Army has been operating summer camps for more than 100 years and values what this experience can bring to children. The overall purpose of any Salvation Army camp is to serve the total personality and needs of the camper; spiritual, educational, social and recreational through a creative, healthful experience, in co-operative group living in outdoor settings.
