A New Brunswick Principal has canceled the daily singing of O Canada at his elementary school. The anthem will now be played monthly at a school-wide assembly. There are many schools across the country that don’t sing the anthem at all.
Erik Millett made the decision after receiving complaints from two parents who objected to piping the daily anthem ritual over the public address system for religious reasons.
An overwhelming number of parents protested the change, but Millett refused to reverse his decision.
Should a principal have this much right to change school policy?
The singing of the anthem pays tribute to this country. We have a culture to be proud of. That is why many people chose to live here.
Says one parent: “To respect another’s beliefs does not mean we need to discard our own, and if it does, and we are willing to do it, we have truly lost our way.”
Unless the school board makes this decision, I don’t think the principal should have made this change. Principals should enforce board policy, not make their own policy.
