New Brunswick Principal Cancels O Canada

ocanadaA New Brunswick Principal has canceled the daily singing of O Canada at his elementary school. The anthem will now be played monthly at a school-wide assembly. There are many schools across the country that don’t sing the anthem at all.

Erik Millett made the decision after receiving complaints from two parents who objected to piping the daily anthem ritual over the public address system for religious reasons.

An overwhelming number of parents protested the change, but Millett refused to reverse his decision.

Should a principal have this much right to change school policy?

The singing of the anthem pays tribute to this country. We have a culture to be proud of. That is why many people chose to live here.

Says one parent: “To respect another’s beliefs does not mean we need to discard our own, and if it does, and we are willing to do it, we have truly lost our way.”

  1. Unless the school board makes this decision, I don’t think the principal should have made this change. Principals should enforce board policy, not make their own policy.

  2. When I was in elementary school, we had a student in our class who, for religious reasons, did not acknowledge the Canadian National anthem. Our anthem was piped in over the PA system, and instead of cancelling its playing for the entire school, this child went in the hallway where there were no speakers. Couldn’t this have been an easier solution?

  3. I too grew up singing the national anthem at school and believe the anthem should be part of every school assembly and it is the school board that should be held accountable not individual principals. Does your school board support singing O’Canada or have a policy on this topic? Let’s not roast another principal who has dedicated his life to the educating Canadian children.

  4. This is the usual foolish reaction to those who come to Canada to change it to their ways – the tail is wagging the dog. We show little self respect for ourselves by catering to them. Canada should give them a donation towards a ticket to return to the country and ways they seem to prefer. If it is strictly a religious issue, then those who don’t care for our anthem should be encouraged to avoid participation and not interfere with others.

  5. I am highly insulted that this person has the gull to cancel the National Anthem .
Being retired Guardsman , who has served in the flq crisis , I take great exception
to this and this principal should be charged with treason .

  6. Being proud of your country has nothing to do with religion; it is about pure pride and tradition. To take that away from our children today is taking away what Canada stands for. We may appear to be a cultural mosaic, but there is still a solid base we stand on as Canadians, beginning with proudly singing the National Anthem.

  7. I see nothing wrong with the anthem being sung. I do not believe the principal should have the right to cancel it. It should be the decision of the school board.

  8. This is how we are destroying our national identity. Men and women fought in battles that we would be free. We are cowtowing to every and any complaint from any source. We have a great country let us celebrate it by singing our National Anthem. Those who object are free to leave our great country and move anywhere else.

The school boards across canada must take a stand. I pay taxes that pay for the schools and their salaries… I do not want my taxes used to support the actions of people in charge whot arbitrarily decide to cancel our national anthem!!

  9. Perhaps we need a new anthem ? An anthem that makes no mention of a diety. I hate to say that but our society reflects less and less our christian foundation. God Bless to all.

  10. What is happening to our country. This is our country!!! if immigrants not like us to be proud of our anthem. then they can leave. they are obviously not Canadian. What happened to democracy and the majority rules. How can 2 families take away our right to show how proud we are to be Canadian. If they don’t like it they can return to wherever they came from. Lets shout it from the tree tops that we are proud to be Canadian and sing our hearts out with our anthem. Other countries do it why not us!!!!! I am an imigrant.. but became a CANADIAN,when I was a small child. This is my country now and wouldn’t change it. These people would not have any say in their own country. I am proud to be Camadian!!!!!!!!!
