Soaring Gas Prices Force Meals on Wheels Shutdown

Seniors across the country are concerned about the upcoming months. Due to rising food costs and soaring gas prices the future of “Meals on Wheels” (a service that deliver meals to individuals at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals) is at stake.

After 35 years of service In Victoria, B.C., more than 200 Meals on Wheels users will have to find other ways to get their food once the program ends in August.

Rising gas prices and the cost of preparing the meals have left organizers no choice but to shut the program down.

Also due to rising gas prices, there is a shortage of volunteers who themselves can’t afford gas for the trips.

Sadly, these elderly shut-ins will not only lose their source of nutrition but, for many, their only daily contact with the outside world.

Losing the service is not only hard for those who receive it, but on those who provide the service.

Problems like this are starting to pop up all over Canada.
