Canadians have a rich history of volunteering and community involvement. Volunteers are on the front lines of all of our community services. The work of the volunteer is essential work.
National Volunteer Week, April 27 – May 3, pays tribute to the millions of Canadian volunteers who donate their time, energy and skills to better their communities. Across Canada and Bermuda, volunteers assist The Salvation Army in a magnitude of ways.
Volunteers supervise Christmas kettles, enabling us to raise funds that help the needy
Volunteers prepare and serve meals in our shelters
Volunteers assist with office work or bulk mailings
Volunteers help with children’s programs
Volunteers work in our thrift stores
Volunteers feed the homeless
Volunteers are friendly visitors and provide program assistance in senior’s residences
Our volunteers come to us from many sources – community groups, individuals wanting to help, those having to do mandatory volunteerism in one form or another, and corporations. Regardless of what prompts that initial contact, our service delivery is enhanced by their efforts.
Volunteer opportunities vary from location to location. Ongoing weekly or monthly opportunities fit the needs of some individuals and groups. There are also opportunties to volunteer for special events.
National Volunteer Week is Canada’s largest annual event celebrating and recognizing the work of the volunteer, and The Salvation Army honours its volunteers.
Thank you to the thousands who turn their compassion into action and volunteer with The Salvation Army.
