DUMAS (March 2, 2007) – Across Dumas, The Salvation Army is assisting people affected by the F3 tornado that hit on Saturday, February 24. The storm left a wide path of destruction in its wake. Approximately 800 workers have lost their jobs due to 25 businesses being completely destroyed. Several people remain hospitalized although there were no deaths. Forty-three houses and 40 mobile homes were destroyed as well as over 25 homes heavily damaged.
Three canteens remained in service through Thursday evening. Over 5,900 meals have been served along with 3,700 drinks and 5,400 snacks. The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management moved into The Methodist Church where The Salvation Army is located to set up a Disaster Recovery Center to offer services to those in need.
Crews from Fort Smith, Little Rock and Pine Bluff, AR have been involved as well as a team of seven Kiwanians from Oklahoma and Texas. Volunteers and Salvation Army officers continue to minister to those affected. Captain Ernie Hall and Sgt. Ric Swartz have both made special connections with many of those served by The Salvation Army. They and the workers have been called “heroes” for bringing services and faith during a time of need.
In addition to feeding those affected by the storm, the Army has also fed many of the prisoners who have been very helpful in cleaning up the debris in the area. Law enforcement officials have also been very appreciative with the Army’s response.
