Port aux Basques, NF – Captain Dena Hepditch, CO, is the leader of “walk aerobics” every morning at the corps. She welcomes people as they come in, places a videotape into the VCR and before pressing play, reads a story or a funny poem for encouragement and takes about three minutes for devotions.
Dena says most of the walk aerobics regulars aren’t regular members of the church congregation.
The workout consists of a walking-on-the-spot workout using all muscle groups by moving th arms and legs in different fashions over a period of 30-45 minutes. Dena walks along with everyone else. She speaks words of encouragement to keep people motivated when she notices them getting tired.
She said the idea of a walk aerobics club came to her after talking to others at a Salvation Army camp. She learned that some women met at their church to work out together.
In October 2005 walk aerobics started with seven people and from there it has bloomed to over 30 people.
