The for Profit companies, increasingly, are pricing donated items right out of the budgets of the customers who most need to use these services. I find it highly objectionable to pay over $10 for used blue jeans, winter coats and shoes and $5 for used tshirts. I am seeing $99 coats, $20 shoes, $15 tshirts and $34.99 blue jeans and I think this is excessive when you consider that the people who donate these items believe that they are giving to charity.

The actual charities,I am told, receives only a set amount based on weight of the donated goods and not a percentage of the predatory prices that are being charged. For this reason, I no longer donate to Value Village (even though they will pick up my donation) and instead drop off donations myself at the Salvation Army store where I shop.

I often put an add on kijiji or look for someone needing clothes for free. Especially for kids as they grow out of clothes so fast. I will happily drop off clothes to someone less fortunate. I wish I had a family member to donate clothing to but as I don't I often look elsewhere. I do regularly donate to V.V. or Salvation Army as well. With 4 kids, I am very fortunate to have enough but I realize not everyone does. If they sell or donate after at least I know they needed it more then I did.

Giving to the Salvation Army would mean they can re-sell for fundraising and re-sell to people who may themselves have small budgets. On the other hand many of us work at for-profitable organizations and we get paid money and it is how the economy works. Personally I prefer to donate items to a place that raises funds for the less fortunate by selling donated goods. I also prefer to shop where the funds go to the community. Democratically speaking, however, we use money to purchase goods and services..and pay tax and for that I can not hold it against any business that makes money. It is the companies that impersonate, mislead, and are not transparent this is what is questionable and in many cases unethical.

I just want to get rid of my stuff in the most environmentally sound way possible. I am glad someone has found a way to make money off of it. I hope they can continue and grow their operations so that I can continue to have my old things reused rather than have them go into a landfill.

Does it really matter if someone makes money from my donation? The only thing that matters is that the clothing ends up being used rather then thrown out. If a company takes my clothing for free, then sells them for cheap to people who need them and can't afford new clothing, so what?

That being said, I just cleaned out my closet, I have four huge garbage bags worth of clothing I don't need, and this includes lots of new jeans, leather jackets, suits, winter jackets, everything, yet I have been searching online for an hour now and cannot find where to take it to. I live in Mississauga, and I have had no luck locating a place to donate my clothing.
