This is a big thing to rid the world of poverty. Of course we can't get everyone in all the developed countries of the world to make peace and each donate $5 to charity, so instead I think the only way to completely eradicate poverty is to do what you can. But between Mike and Lieut Ron Farr I have to say that Mike's argument has much more sense. Truly loving our neighbours is just one thing that we can do, but there's more to it than just that.

The comment Jesus makes about "The poor being with us always" is a quote from the Old Testament. God's laws were put in place to support those in need. Sabbath Rest, The Year of Jubilee, Gleaning Laws were all set up to assist those in economic need. Mike, I think Jesus had a larger meaning than the one he gave to Mary and Martha

By learning to actually follow Jesus. That's "follow", which is different than "believe in". We will eradicate poverty by not trying to eradicate poverty, but by truly loving our neighbours.

(BTW, Jesus' line about always having the poor with us is from a story about Mary and Martha, not a story about the poor. It is not an invitation to stop trying to eradicate poverty. And if it has anything to do with the poor at all, I believe it is an indictment.)

Jesus said "The poor you will have with you always". Our question should not be "How will be eradicate poverty?", our question should be "How do we work with the poor to assist in building a quality of social and spiritual life in the midst of economic want?"
